Customised Individual Education Programme for the Head of Administration at Prime Minister's Office

Client Request

The prime minister's office of a dynamic, developing country was coordinating major reforms in its public sector. To update its key staff on the latest trends in effective public sector management, they decided to send one of their senior officials to a leading university for private study. They turned to LSE Enterprise to design and deliver a customised executive education programme which addressed the needs and objectives at hand.

Approach and Methodology

LSE Enterprise designed a unique individually-customised, four-month residential course in the field of public sector management. The beginning of the programme was syncronised with the start of the academic term at the school so that the individual could take advantage of undergraduate and post-graduate lectures at LSE. An academic director - an expert in public sector affairs with decades of career and academic experience - was appointed to the programme to guide the individual. The other main components of the programme included private tutoring sessions, topical workshops, one-on-one expert discussions, invitations to public sector conferences and special events, and monitored independent study.

Solution and Benefits

A comprehensive and focused programme was developed for the government official, with topics covering policy planning and development, human resource management in the public sector, performance management, privatisation and private finance initiatives, and e-government, among others. The programme schedule was intensive and the course extended over four months. An integral part of the opportunity to study at LSE was access to the new library -- the largest social sciences library in the world. LSE Enterprise  managed the programme from start to finish, liaising with the client at the prime minister's office in advance of the programme and providing post-programme follow-up. The client was able to gain a fundamental understanding of his chosen topics and fields of interest, debate and engage with theoretical and practical issues at the highest level, review and discuss the latest trends in government sector management, and immerse himself in LSE's wider community.
